Chris Pyatt, national sprinter and Masters champion and John Geddes, Olympic bronze medalist were regulars at the Newcastle track league in the late 1980's.
The track was resurfaced with asphalt in 2004 at a cost of £250,000 financed by the National Lottery. Newcastle has organised a few Open meetings, in 2019 the National tandem and Youth Omnium, 2015 National Sprinter League and mid-summer Open meets.
The cycle track is around a football pitch which is the home of Newcastle Town FC, there is a 300 seat stand with room for a further 1,000 people under cover.
The stadium runs a Thursday evening track league (the Brooks Cycles Track League) throughout the summer. The track is open most evenings for training and bike hire is available.
